Merpati Putih: A Casual Display Font for Creative Projects

Opening a fresh brand board one morning, I found myself staring at a blank canvas. It was the start of a small café identity project, and I needed something that felt warm, approachable, and just a little bit playful. That’s when I first met Merpati Putih.

Merpati Putih is an incredibly unique and adaptable display font. Its soft curves and balanced structure give it a friendly yet refined look. The name itself, which translates to “White Dove” in Indonesian, hints at a sense of peace and purity — a mood that fits well with casual or informal branding.

A Logo Concept That Feels Right at Home

I tested Merpati Putih on a logo concept for the café. The font's gentle serifs and open counters gave the design a welcoming feel without being too ornate. It worked perfectly for the café’s tagline, adding a touch of elegance while keeping the overall vibe light and inviting.

Compared to other display fonts I’ve used before, Merpati Putih stands out for its adaptability. It doesn’t scream for attention but still holds its own in a visual hierarchy. This makes it ideal for logos where the focus is on clarity and warmth rather than boldness.

From Brand Boards to Packaging Mockups

As I moved through the brand development process, Merpati Putih proved its versatility. On the brand board, it complemented hand-drawn illustrations and minimalist photography. For packaging mockups, it looked great on coffee bags and takeaway cups, especially in smaller sizes where legibility remained intact.

One thing I noticed was how well it paired with sans serif fonts for body text. Combining Merpati Putih with a clean sans serif like Helvetica Neue created a nice contrast between headline and supporting text, making the overall design more dynamic.

On business cards, it added a personal touch. The font’s subtle personality made the cards feel less corporate and more like a genuine invitation to connect. Even on social media layouts, it brought a sense of cohesion to posts and stories without overwhelming the visuals.

When to Use Merpati Putih and When to Avoid It

Merpati Putih shines as a display font, headline font, or short phrase font. It’s perfect for logos, brand tags, product labels, and any design that needs a casual, friendly tone. However, it might not be the best choice for long-form content or formal corporate use.

At smaller sizes, the details in the letterforms can become less defined, which could affect readability in certain contexts. For body text, I’d recommend pairing it with a more legible typeface to maintain professionalism and clarity.

If you're working on a project that requires a high level of formality or needs to accommodate large amounts of text, consider using Merpati Putih as an accent or decorative element rather than the primary typeface.

Testing Before Committing

Before using Merpati Putih in final client work, I always suggest testing it in different contexts. Try it on a shop sign, a website hero section, or even an Instagram post. See how it behaves across various backgrounds and color schemes.

Also, check if the font includes alternate characters, ligatures, or swashes that might enhance your design. These features can add a layer of customization and help make your brand stand out.

Lastly, don’t forget to review the commercial font licensing. Make sure you have the right to use Merpati Putih in client work, templates, merchandise, websites, or print-on-demand products. This step ensures you’re compliant and avoids any legal issues down the line.

Merpati Putih has earned a spot in my go-to font collection. It’s not just a display font; it’s a versatile tool that brings warmth and character to creative projects. Whether you're designing a brand identity, crafting a packaging label, or updating your social media layout, Merpati Putih offers a reliable and stylish option that feels just right for informal and casual designs.
